Consumers’ Association of Canada and Trial Lawyers Association of BCJoin Forces to
Fight Back Against Proposed Changes to Civil Court
Groups Warn: Justice will Take Longer and Cost More
(Vancouver) – Due to shared concerns about civil justice, the Consumers’ Association of Canada (CAC) and the Trial Lawyers Association of BC (TLABC) are working together to educate the public and persuade politicians that the proposed changes to court rules are particularly harmful for ordinary citizens.
“Everything about civil justice will take longer and cost more if the proposed rule changes are approved by the BC Government,” said TLABC president Stephen Frame. “The changes would also create a two-tiered system of justice, whereby the average citizen would be at a disadvantage opposite corporations and others with deeper pockets.”
In a combined effort today, CAC and TLABC published the first in a series of print ads designed to raise awareness about this issue. The ad is running today in five BC-based papers. Ads will run in additional papers in the coming weeks and months. As well, a website has been established to provide detailed information about the effects of the proposed new rules. The ad can be obtained through the website -

“Having access to justice is enormously important for individual citizens,” said CAC president Bruce Cran. “It is ordinary people who can least afford to lose their right to a day in court.” Mr. Cran is based in BC, but is also the spokesperson of CAC’s national office.
CAC and TLABC speak and act on behalf of individual citizens. The groups are advocates for protecting individual rights, including the right to seek remedies through the courts. The groups want to bring as much attention to this matter as possible before the proposed changes are put to the provincial cabinet for approval.
