FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Consumers' Association of Canada says "Hey! Hey! Minister MacKay we need our Passports today"

(Ottawa)

With one deadline for Passports needed to enter the USA passed and another looming, Passport Canada seems incapable of coping. The CAC calls again on Minister MacKay to take whatever action is necessary to provide Canadians with timely efficient service.

"The Passport problem cannot be swept under the rug" said Bruce Cran, CAC President. "Too many Canadians are being affected."

Recommendations
  1. Remove the requirement that the same documents be inspected with every passport application.
  2. Double the life of a passport to 10 years. Follow the lead of the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.
  3. Provide more passport offices in locations where they are needed.
  4. Provide reasonable access to contact Passport Canada for information.
USA Ambassador, David Wilkins, made it quite clear on Monday that a Passport Law has been passed by Congress and it is here to stay.
