CONSUMERS ASSOCIATION CALLS ON GOVERNMENT TO REJECT DEMANDS FROM HEAVILY SUBSIDISED INSURANCE INDUSTRY FOR EXTRA MILLIONS FROM PUBLIC PURSE

“The latest action of the heavily subsidized insurance industry, following a $700,000 public relations escapade, is to seek a contribution of $50,000,000 from our Federal coffers for an accident scheme of their own invention. This is an appalling exercise in hubris.” said CAC President Bruce Cran. “In British Columbia, a province served by a Public Auto Insurance System, the Insurance Corporation of BC already contributes $50.000,000 per year, from collected premiums on Road Safety Programs. There is no contribution from Private Auto Insurers.” he said.

This request for more millions comes from an industry already subsidized in Ontario to the extent of $30,000 for each and every major injury claim and in the Maritime Provinces and Alberta by the implementation of severely restrictive caps on injuries. All this at a time when we are informed the industry is headed toward a profit for the current year close to six billion dollars, substantially eclipsing last year’s record.

The Consumer’s Association of Canada urges the Federal Government to throw this ludicrous demand back where it belongs as a responsibility of the insurance industry.
We also urge the Ontario Government to honour it’s promise to remove the unjust $30,000. subsidy taken on the backs of injured Ontarians and on other provincial governments to remove their restrictive caps.
